BETIC– Biomedical Engineering & Technology Innovation Centre is an inter-disciplinary multi-institution initiative by the Government of Maharashtra to catalyse indigenous medical device innovation. The long-term goal is to evolve an inclusive, scalable and sustainable model for developing novel, reliable, suitable and affordable devices for the local population.
During 2014-2025, more than 150 faculty members, full-time researchers and students have worked at BETIC centers in IIT Bombay, VNIT Nagpur and COE Pune in close collaboration with as many expert clinicians, industry partners and domain consultants to develop a variety of diagnostic devices, surgical instruments and assistive products. Till date BETIC has generated 43 project in total out of which 22 are startups and 21 projects are licensed to industry.
The ICMR-DHR Centre of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Bombay is a groundbreaking initiative focused on medical-grade pilot manufacturing and testing of innovative medical devices. Its primary goal is to bridge the gap between research prototypes and market-ready products. Leveraging on IIT Bombay’s extensive expertise in biomedical engineering, healthcare, and medical device innovation, the CoE offers a cutting-edge facility equipped for precision manufacturing of biocompatible plastics, metals, ceramics, and composites.
Certified with ISO 13485 compliance, the CoE supports startups, researchers, and industry partners by facilitating the smooth transition of novel healthcare ideas from research to the market while maintaining affordability and quality. The CoE's mission is to strengthen the indigenous medical device ecosystem by promoting local development, fostering innovation, and enhancing industry collaboration, ultimately making advanced medical devices more accessible and impactful for society.
